The Exotic Beach with the Sunken Ancient City
Plytra Beach (also known as Pachiammos) is the jewel of the Municipality of Monemvasia in Laconia. It is an impressive and extremely spacious golden beach that stretches in front of the traditional settlement of the same name. Its biggest secret is hidden at its bottom: the sunken ancient city of Asopos, which was lost underwater after a major earthquake in 365 AD.
- Type of beach: Vast, fine golden sand in and out of the water. The waters are very shallow, crystal clear and consistently awarded the Blue Flag.
- Suitable for: Families with young children due to the safe, shallow sea and soft sand. It is considered a top destination for snorkeling, as you swim over ancient Roman buildings.
- Infrastructure: Fully organized with a beach bar, umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, a beach volleyball court and a lifeguard. Just above it are traditional fish taverns and quality rooms to rent, while plenty of free space is also offered.
- Access: Very easy by road via an asphalt road (about 40-45 minutes from Monemvasia or Sparta). It has large, comfortable and free parking spaces just a few meters from the wave.
