Kalo Nero Beach

The Endless Sands of Kyparissia BayΗ Απέραντη Αμμουδιά του Κυπαρισσιακού Κόλπου

Kalo Nero Beach (or Kalonero) is one of the most popular, extensive and lively beaches of western Messinia. It is located in front of the seaside settlement of the same name, just 6 kilometres north of Kyparissia. It is a huge, long, open beach washed by the Ionian Sea and is famous for its crystal clear waters, idyllic sunsets, and its enormous ecological importance.
  • Type of coast: A vast expanse of coarse, golden sand mixed with pebbles on the coast. At the entrance to the sea there are large pebbles and scattered natural seabed slabs, while the waters are crystal clear, cooled by the Ionian Sea and deepen relatively quickly. Due to their quality, the coast is consistently awarded the Blue Flag.
  • Suitable for: Travelers of all ages looking for comfort and plenty of space, but also for surfing enthusiasts, as its geographical location in the open sea favors the creation of waves. Due to the stones and slabs at the entrance, beach shoes are recommended.
  • Nature Protection: The beach is the second most important nesting area for the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle in the entire Mediterranean. During the summer season, the nests are carefully marked with special wooden grids, while an information station operates in the area for their protection.
  • Infrastructure: Excellently organized. Along the coast there are tasteful beach bars, cafes, canteens and the famous fish taverns of the settlement that serve fresh fish on the waves. It has umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, as well as a beach volleyball court.
