The Colorful Underground Wonder of Mantineia with its Impressive Stalactites
The Kapsia Cave is one of the most impressive, mysterious and timeless destinations of natural interest in Arcadia. It is located in the heart of the Peloponnese, in a privileged location in the homonymous village of Kapsia, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Tripoli and very close to the traditional settlement of Levidi. The great advantage of the area is that the cave is among the 10 most important Greek caves, as its underground nature hides a rare wealth of colorful stalactites and stalagmites, creating an ideal environment for exploration, which extends over a mapped area of approximately 3,800 square meters.
- Type of route: A continuous, completely safe and specially designed underground corridor that combines fixed bridges, low lighting and protective railings. The temperature inside remains constant all year round at 15-16 degrees Celsius, while the water dripping from the ceiling constantly renews the life of the elaborate natural formations ("room of wonders").
- Suitable for:Families, students, nature lovers and travelers looking for a unique geological experience. The cave is traditionally famous for its archaeological and scientific character, as fossilized human bones, pottery and traces of flooding dating back to the Neolithic and Hellenistic periods have been found inside.
- Infrastructure: Exemplarily organized for the public. The cave has experienced guides who accompany visitors, a modern reception building with a shop, toilets and full accessibility. In the surrounding area there is a café/refreshment bar, while the wider area of Mantineia is famous for its visitable wineries and traditional taverns.
- Access:Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from Athens takes approximately 1.5 hours (140 kilometers) via the Corinth - Tripoli highway (Exit for Nemea/Levidi). From the center of Tripoli the distance is covered in just 15 minutes by car. A large, comfortable free parking space is available at the entrance to the archaeological/geological site.
