The Model Technological Museum of Dimitsana with the Living Traditional Workshops
The Open-Air Museum of Water Power is one of the most famous, original and timeless attractions of the entire Mountainous Arcadia. It is located in the heart of the Peloponnese, in a privileged and verdant location at Kefalari of Ai-Yiannis, just 1.5 kilometers east of Dimitsana and approximately 50 kilometers from Tripoli. The great advantage of the museum, which was created and operates under the auspices of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), is that it has restored traditional installations that are powered exclusively by water, offering an ideal environment for families and travelers, which extends into a dense forest of plane trees and running water.
- Route type: A continuous, beautiful walking path in nature that combines stone cobblestones, wooden bridges and covered workshops. The waters of the homonymous spring of Ai-Yiannis flow rapidly through the estate, moving the large wooden wheels and continuously supplying the pre-industrial facilities.
- Suitable for: Families with children, students, architecture enthusiasts and travelers looking for an experiential contact with history. The museum is traditionally famous for its educational and historical character, as visitors see in live operation how old craftsmen produced goods using only water.
- Infrastructure: Exemplary and internationally recognized organization. The site features a fully restored watermill and a watermill (for washing clothes and grinding wheat), a tannery (leather processing) and a historic gunpowder mill, which recalls the great contribution of Dimitsana to the Revolution of 1821. A modern screening room, a shop with publications, toilets and excellent signage are available.
- Access: Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from the center of Dimitsana takes only 5 minutes by car (or 20 minutes on foot via a passable path), while from Athens the distance is about 2 hours. The museum is also one of the main gateways to the famous Lousios Gorge and the Menalon Trail. A comfortable, free parking space is available at the entrance.
