The Impregnable Tsakonian Mansion of 1821 with the Polemistres and Traditional Intelligence
The Tsikaliotis Tower is one of the most imposing, oldest and most enduring monuments of the entire South Kynouria in Arcadia. It is located in the eastern Peloponnese, occupying an extremely privileged location in the heart of the traditional settlement of Leonidio. The great advantage of the mansion is that it is the top and most representative example of pre-revolutionary Tsakonian Architecturein the Peloponnese, having been built in 1808 by Konstantinos Tsikaliotis—a wealthy timber merchant in Trieste, scion of an old Tsakonian family and a prominent member of the Filiki Eteria, who donated his fortune to the liberation of the nation.
- Fortification type: An authentic, private defensive residence with strong Byzantine influences, which is developed in a "L" shape and includes two levels. The house is designed to be completely invisible and secure: it is surrounded by a strong, 3.5-meter-high stone rampart wall with a taller circular defensive turret in the corner, while the entire building is dotted with rifle pits and has a secret crypt.
- Suitable for: Families, students, architecture lovers and travelers who wish to discover how the rulers of pre-revolutionary Greece lived. The place is traditionally famous for its constructional ingenuity, as its interior hides elaborate wooden paneling, carved ceilings, huge fireplaces with hidden, common chimneys, handmade locks, a cistern and an oven that ensured complete autonomy in the event of a siege.
- Infrastructure: Exemplarily restored by the Municipality of South Kynouria, which is also the owner of the monument. Today, the auxiliary and storage spaces on the ground floor have been converted into exhibition halls, as the Tower operates as a living cultural space, hosting painting exhibitions, book presentations and artistic events. Its location offers direct access to the neighboring infrastructures of Leonidio.
- Access: Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from Astros takes about 40 minutes by car, while from Tripoli the distance is covered in about 1.5 hours via the Parnonas road network. As Pyrgos dominates the urban fabric of Leonidio, the approach is on foot through the picturesque, narrow alleys of the town. Free parking is available in the wider area.
