Archaeological Site of Ancient Messene
Description
The Impregnable "Stronghold" of Freedom with its 9-Kilometer Walls and Hippodamian Ingenuity
The archaeological site of Ancient Messene is one of the most imposing, vast, and well-preserved archaeological monuments in all of Messenia and Greece. It is located in the southwestern Peloponnese, occupying a highly privileged position at the western foothills of the historic, fortified Mount Ithome, amidst a lush landscape of olive groves and vineyards. The great advantage of Ancient Messene is that it is not merely an isolated monument, but an entire ancient citypreserved in exceptional condition. It was founded in the winter of 370–369 BC by the renowned Theban general Epaminondas following his victory over the Spartans, marking the liberation and independence of the Messenians after centuries of subjugation.
- Fortification type:A monumental state defensive line, comprising one of the most impressive fortification systems of the ancient world. The city was enclosed by a formidable stone wall with a total perimeter of 9 to 9.5 kilometers, reinforced by dozens of two-story square and circular towers. The fortification's defining feature is the monumental Arcadian Gate—a double gate with a circular inner courtyard and a massive central stone—designed with such defensive ingenuity that it trapped invaders inside.
- Suitable for: families, students, lovers of classical architecture, nature enthusiasts, and travelers wishing to walk through the neighborhoods of a vibrant ancient metropolis. The site spans 400 stremmata and is renowned for its ingenious urban planning, having been built according to the famous Hippodamian system (a geometric grid of parallel streets). Within its grounds lie a massive theater, the impressive Arsinoe Fountain, the Asclepieion (which served as the religious and political center), and one of the most stunning and well-preserved ancient stadiums and gymnasiums to be found anywhere in the world.
- Infrastructure: Exemplarily excavated, protected, and restored, the site bears the enduring stamp of the late Professor Petros Themelis’s work over several decades. It operates as a vast, well-organized archaeological park featuring excellent signage, internal walking paths, shaded rest areas beneath olive trees, and accessibility facilities (such as restrooms for people with disabilities). Slightly higher up, at the entrance to the village of Mavrommati, stands the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Messene, which houses thousands of priceless sculptures and artifacts recovered from the excavations.
- Access: Very easy, quick, and convenient via the Messinia road network. The drive from Kalamata takes approximately 35–40 minutes (a distance of 30 km), while the journey from Tripoli takes about 50 minutes via the motorway. Access to the monuments is on foot, starting from the visitor reception center. Ample free parking is available both outside the archaeological site and near the Museum.
