Description
The Modern Amphitheater of the Arts: Where Great Summer Nights Are Filled with Light and Melody
The Floka Open-Air Theatre (officially known as the "Olympia" Theatre) stands as the premier modern cultural jewel of the entire Municipality of Ancient Olympia. Located in the western Peloponnese, it is set in a beautiful, lush, and tranquil rural landscape just 3 kilometers west of the world-renowned sacred archaeological site. Its greatest asset is that it serves as the heart and permanent home of the International Festival of Ancient Olympia, hosting the country's most significant touring theatrical productions, ancient tragedies, and major musical concerts each summer.
- Character of the Venue: An impressive modern structure with a capacity of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 seats. The theater is built in an amphitheater style, faithfully adhering to the architectural lines and design of authentic ancient Greek theaters. It features stone tiers of seating that embrace a large, circular orchestra, while offering excellent visibility and acoustics from every seat.
- Suitable for: theater enthusiasts, music lovers, families, and travelers wishing to experience the magic of a summer cultural evening under the stars. Its stage hosts top-tier productions from the National Theatre and the Athens & Epidaurus Festival—ranging from iconic tragedies like *The Persians* and *The Bacchae* to classic comedies—as well as concerts by renowned Greek artists.
- Infrastructure & Operation: The theater is managed in an exemplary manner by the Municipality of Ancient Olympia. It operates exclusively during the summer months (June to September). It features spacious backstage areas for performers, modern lighting and sound systems, as well as essential facilities to serve the audience during events.
- Access: It is extremely easy and quick to reach, as it is just a 5-minute drive from the center of modern Ancient Olympia; simply follow the signs for the village of Flokas. The journey from Pyrgos takes approximately 25 minutes. A vast, convenient, and free parking area—with space for hundreds of cars—is available right outside the theater, making arrival completely stress-free.
