Stymphalia Environment Museum
Description
The Green Observatory of Mountainous Corinthia: Where Architectural Ingenuity Merges with the Lake Ecosystem
The Stymphalia Environment Museum is one of the most innovative, modern, and award-winning architectural gems in the entire Peloponnese. Located in mountainous Corinthia, it is built in an exemplary manner on a hillside overlooking the mythical Lake Stymphalia. Its great distinction is that it serves as a model ecological museum, created and operated under the auspices of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), with the aim of highlighting the inextricable link between humanity and the environment, as well as the region's traditional technology.
- Architectural & Ecological Character: An impressive building with clean lines, designed by the architectural firm of Tasis Papaioannou and Dimitris Issaias. Its construction relies on the use of natural materials (wood, stone, exposed concrete) and large glass surfaces. The building is designed to "disappear" into the landscape, while its interior is bathed in natural light, offering an unobstructed, 360-degree panoramic view of the lake's reed beds.
- Suitable for: Families with children, students, nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and travelers wishing to discover the hidden side of the mountainous Peloponnese. The permanent exhibition offers a highly interactive experience, featuring digital models, short films, traditional artifacts belonging to local fishermen and hunters, and a unique open-style indoor aquarium that provides a cross-section view of the lakebed, complete with live plants and endemic fish.
- Facilities & Accessibility: A state-of-the-art, fully air-conditioned space designed with full consideration for accessibility for people with disabilities and strollers (ramps, special walkways, restrooms). The museum features an excellent wooden balcony equipped with special telescopes for observing rare migratory birds, an organized shop selling publications, and a snack bar/café overlooking the alpine landscape.
- Access: Very easy, quick, and comfortable by car. It is located approximately 25–30 minutes from the town of Kiato (and the Olympia Odos exit) and less than an hour and a half from Athens. The mountain route is fully paved and leads directly to the top of the hill where the museum is situated, offering a large, free parking area.
