Holy Monastery of Aimyaloi
Description
The Contemplative Rock Sanctuary: Where Post-Byzantine Art Takes Root in the Shadow of Ancient Plane Trees
The Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos at Aimyaloi is one of the most atmospheric, serene, and architecturally impressive religious monuments in all of Arcadia. It lies in the heart of mountainous Gortynia, situated at the foot of Kleinitsa Hill—overlooking the gorge of the Isvoras torrent (a tributary of the Lousios River)—between the historic villages of Dimitsana and Zygovisti. The monastery’s most striking feature is its ingenious integration into the landscape: it is built—literally wedged—into the hollow face of a massive rock, making a visit a unique experience where human architecture becomes one with the natural cave.
- Architectural and Artistic Character: A 17th-century concept blending defensive and artistic elements. Founded in 1608 by the hieromonk Gregorios Kontogiannis and his sister Eupraxia, the monastery is distinguished by its T-shaped layout. A key feature of the site is the defensive "Monastery Tower," equipped with historic loopholes. The monastery’s *katholikon* (main church) is a small, single-aisled structure concealed within a natural cave and sheltered by a massive rock formation. Its interior is adorned with striking frescoes from 1608—painted by the renowned artists Dimitrios and Georgios Moschos from Nafplio (representatives of the Cretan School)—as well as an elaborate wood-carved iconostasis dating to 1632.
- Suitable for: Travelers seeking authentic "hidden gems" of the Peloponnese, in a setting of absolute tranquility and spirituality. Enthusiasts of post-Byzantine art and history, as well as nature lovers exploring the Lousios network. The memory of the pre-revolutionary struggles is preserved at the monastery. Just a few meters outside the monastery lies the historic "Linos (wine press) of the Kolokotronis family", the stone structure where, in 1806, a group of *klephts* led by Giannos Kolokotronis (Zorbas)—a cousin of Theodoros Kolokotronis—was trapped and heroically wiped out following an act of betrayal.
- Facilities: An exceptionally well-cared-for, welcoming, and impeccably maintained site. Aimyalon Monastery currently operates as an active male monastery. It features a beautiful, stone-paved inner courtyard shaded by an ancient plane tree, basic information signage, and a renovated guesthouse. Thanks to the level layout of the entrance and courtyard—compared to other "hanging" monasteries in the area—the site is easily accessible (although the interior steps of the church and the monks' cells require caution).
- Access: Very easy by car, making it one of the most accessible monasteries in the gorge. It is located just 5–10 minutes (2.5 km) south of Dimitsana. Access is via the paved Dimitsana–Stemnitsa road, following the signs that pass by the famous Open-Air Water-Power Museum and the Agiannis Spring. The road leads directly to the monastery gate, where ample free parking is available.
