Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos “Boura”

The Stronghold of Arcadian Taygetos: Where Komnenian Austerity Protects the Treasures of Falaisia

The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos "Boura" is one of the most historic, spiritually evocative, and architecturally impressive fortified monasteries in all of southern Arcadia. It is located in the Municipality of Megalopolis, situated on a lush, serene hill at the foothills of the Arcadian Taygetos range, between the historic villages of Leontari and Falaisia. The monastery’s most striking feature is its authentic fortification: designed as an impregnable medieval stronghold, it offers a unique visitor experience where Byzantine defensive architecture serves as a shield for a centuries-long, unbroken spiritual life.
  • Architectural and Artistic Character: A monumental conception resembling a Byzantine castle. Although written records are scarce, the monastery's architectural structure indicates it was built during the 11th or 12th century—the era of the Komnenian Renaissance. The complex is distinguished by its imposing defensive "Tower," standing 10 meters tall and dominating the edge of the walls. At the center of the enclosed, flower-filled rectangular courtyard rises the *Katholikon*, an elegant basilica. The church's interior is deeply evocative, adorned with rich, crimson-hued post-Byzantine frescoes from 1710—painted by the renowned Pediotis brothers—which are uniquely highlighted by the glow of the oil lamps.
  • Suitable for: Enthusiasts of fortified monasteries and medieval architecture seeking authentic, tranquil historical monuments. Pilgrims and travelers seeking absolute spiritual serenity and a connection with the mountain landscape. The monastery preserves the memory of the Nation's great struggles. Due to its fortified location, it served as a gathering place for the *Filiki Etaireia* (Society of Friends) in the pre-revolutionary years, while during the Revolution of 1821, it acted as a strategic supply hub and a refuge for the fighters. The monastery withstood the fury of the Turco-Albanians in 1770 and of Ibrahim in 1825–26. Today, the nuns safeguard the historic icon of the Virgin Mary "Megalomata" (1831) as a precious treasure.
  • Facilities: An impeccably renovated, spotless, and exceptionally welcoming site. The Boura Monastery has been operating as an active coenobitic convent since 1984. The nuns maintain exemplary workshops for iconography and gold embroidery, while welcoming visitors to the well-kept reception area with traditional refreshments. Thanks to the level layout of the inner courtyard and the accessible buildings surrounding the Katholikon, the site offers excellent accessibility for visitors.
  • Access: Very easy by car, with direct access requiring no hiking. The monastery is located right next to the Leontari–Sparta provincial road. It lies approximately 6 kilometers south of Leontari and 4 kilometers before the village of Falaisia. The road is fully paved, comfortable, and flat, leading directly to the monastery's outer gate. Ample free parking is available just outside the walls, under the shade of the trees.
