Panagia Sgrapas

The Lighthouse of Pylia: Where Religious Devotion Gazes Upon the Historic Carnage of the Battle of Navarino

The Holy Shrine of Panagia Sgrapa (or Zourtsa) is one of the most vibrant, popular, and spiritually radiant pilgrimage sites in all of Messenia. It is located in the province of Pylia, strategically situated atop a lush green hill just a few kilometers outside Gialova. The church’s most striking asset is its unsurpassed, breathtaking view: its location serves as a vast natural balcony offering visitors a panoramic vista of Navarino Bay, the Gialova Lagoon, and the boundless Ionian Sea, turning the visit into a unique experience of awe where historical memory blends with religious reverence.
  • Architectural and Artistic Character: A modern, monumental conception of Byzantine grandeur. Although the site’s history dates back to 1892—marking the miraculous discovery of the icon by a humble shepherd—the impressive building complex seen today took shape only in recent decades. At the center of a vast, impeccably paved square stands the majestic Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the cross-in-square Byzantine style and featuring a large central dome. Its exterior is distinguished by two tall, symmetrical bell towers on the façade, while the light-filled interior houses an imposing marble iconostasis and exquisite contemporary iconography.
  • Suitable for: Pilgrims and travelers seeking major religious landmarks with a rich history of spiritual and charitable work. Nature lovers, photographers, and families, as the surrounding area offers one of the most beautiful vistas of the Messenian landscape, especially at sunset. The church preserves the memory of the discovery of the miraculous, historic Icon of the Virgin Mary Eleousa (Sgrapas). The site is inextricably linked to the modern history of Pylia, as it was from this hill that, in 1827, the inhabitants witnessed the historic Battle of Navarino—an event that sealed Greek independence. Today, the shrine operates as an independent spiritual institution with a significant social mission.
  • Infrastructure: State-of-the-art, well-organized and exemplary well-maintained space. The pilgrimage has large stone lodges (cells) to accommodate hundreds of visitors, ceremonial halls, toilets, a rich manor house and a church goods store. Due to the modern reconstruction, the huge flat cobbled squares and specially designed corridors, the site offers exemplary and full accessibility for people with disabilities (PWD) and prams on all levels.
  • Access: Very easy by car, with excellent and convenient connections. It is located just 10 minutes (approximately 6 km) from Pylos and 5 minutes from the coastal village of Gialova. Access is via the Pylos-Kyparissia provincial road, following clear signage that leads up a gentle incline toward Sgrapa Hill. The road is fully paved, wide, and comfortable, leading directly to the main gate of the pilgrimage site, where a vast, free private parking area is available for cars and tourist buses.
