Description
The Eagle's Nest Monument of Mainalos with its Stunning Panoramic View and Marble Thrones
The Ancient Theater of Orchomenos of Arcadia is one of the most evocative, atmospheric and timeless cultural destinations of the entire Central Arcadia. It is located in the northern part of the prefecture, built in a shocking, amphitheater location on the eastern slope of the hill of the ancient acropolis, at an impressive altitude reaching 800 meters, very close to the town of Levidis The great advantage of the monument is the unique "eagle's nest" in which it is developed, offering visitors a mesmerizing, unobstructed panoramic view of the fertile plain of Orchomenos and Kandila, surrounded by the imposing volumes of Artemision and Mainalus.
- Route type: A mountainous, uphill archaeological walk combining marked dirt paths and stone steps in nature. The tour brings the visitor in front of a horseshoe-shaped hollow of the Hellenistic period, which in antiquity had over 40 rows of seats. Today, in the lower part, 10 rows of seats are preserved in good condition, as well as the impressive marble thrones of the presidency with embossed arms and backrests, where the official religious officials sat.
- Suitable for: Nature lovers, hikers, classical archaeology enthusiasts and travelers seeking absolute tranquility away from mass tourism. The theater is traditionally famous for its artistic and cultic character, as it was built around the 4th to 3rd century BC inside the ancient agora to host major theatrical and musical competitions in honor of the god Dionysus, with a total capacity of nearly 4,000 spectators
- Infrastructure:Mildly developed, fenced archaeological site under the protection of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Arcadia. The monument maintains its completely authentic and untouched atmosphere, as no extensive modern interventions have been made. In the wider area (in nearby Levidi and modern Orchomenos) there are excellent traditional guesthouses, cafes, shops with local products and famous Arcadian taverns.
- Access: Relatively easy, with a small bit of hiking. The transition from the center of Tripolitakes about 25-30 minutes by car(25 kilometers) via the Tripoli-Olympia National Road, turning at the height of Levidio. Drivers leave their vehicle on the landscaped plateau/parking lot and then follow a passable, uphill path for about 15 minutes to the first monuments and another 10 minutes to the top of the citadel.
