Ancient Theatre of Messene
Description
The "Hollow" of Freedom with the Gigantic Retaining Walls and the Mobile Stage
The Ancient Theatre of Messene is one of the most imposing, monumental, and remarkably well-preserved architectural masterpieces in all of Messenia and Greece. Situated in the northwestern section of the Archaeological Site of Ancient Messene, it is the first major monument visitors encounter as they descend from the Museum toward the Agora. A key feature of the theatre is its monumental scale; built during the 3rd–2nd century BC, it was designed to serve not only as a venue for theatrical performances but also as a site for mass political gatherings of the citizens of free Messene, boasting a capacity of up to 10,000 spectators.
- Fortification type: An authentic, imposing structure that resembles a genuine fortress from the outside. Since the cavea does not rest entirely on a natural hill, Messenian engineers constructed a massive, arc-shaped retaining wall. This wall is reinforced with square defensive towers and built using the isodomic masonry technique with enormous stone blocks, making the theater stand out for its defensive grandeur.
- Suitable for: families, students, lovers of classical architecture, and travelers wishing to admire the engineering ingenuity of the Hellenistic period. The theater conceals a rare engineering innovation: it featured a wheeled (movable) wooden stage, which was stored in an adjacent building (the *skeuotheke*) and rolled onto three parallel stone tracks in the orchestra only during performances. During the Roman era (1st–3rd centuries AD), the stage was replaced by a permanent, multi-story marble structure featuring impressive niches and statues.
- Infrastructure:Exemplarily restored and rehabilitated following decades of painstaking excavations led by Professor Petros Themelis, with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. After 600 years of silence, the theater came back to life in 2013 and is now fully operational. It selectively hosts premier theatrical performances, concerts, and cultural events during the summer months, boasting exceptional acoustics and excellent signage for visitors.
- Access: Very easy and direct. As it is an integral part of the organized archaeological park of Ancient Messene, it is accessible on foot from the main entrance gate. The drive from Kalamata takes approximately 35–40 minutes, and ample free parking is available outside the archaeological site.
