The Underground Palace of Morea with Crystal Stalactites and Floating Mysticism
The Diros Caves (with the cave of Vlychada or Glyfada as the top one) are one of the most imposing, ancient and internationally recognized natural monuments of the entire Laconian Mani. They are located in the southern Peloponnese, occupying an extremely privileged location on the west coast of Mani, in the sheltered Bay of Diros. The great advantage of the cave is that it is one of the most beautiful lake caves in the world with its known length now exceeding 15 kilometers, offering visitors a rare experience of underground navigation among a forest of millions of colorful stalactites and stalagmites.

- Fortification type:An authentic, natural underground fortification sculpted by water over hundreds of thousands of years. The cave is designed by nature to be completely protected and inaccessible: its original natural entrance was only half a meter in diameter, hidden very close to the sea surface, while its interior develops into labyrinthine water corridors, closed chambers and secret passages that in some places reach a depth of 100 meters underwater.
- Suitable for: Families, students, geology enthusiasts, nature lovers and travelers who wish to discover the secrets that the land of Mani hides in its bowels. The area is traditionally famous for its natural intelligence and unique atmosphere, as visitors board small boats to tour the crystal clear lakes with a constant water temperature of 14°C, admiring formations with poetic names such as the “Pink Apartment”, the “Sea of Shipwrecks” and the “Tower of Babel”.
- Infrastructure: Exemplarily developed and organized by the Public Property Company (PTC) in collaboration with the Municipality of Eastern Mani and the Hellenic Speleological Society. Today, the cave has modern reception facilities, safe lighting that highlights the formations, experienced boatmen-guides and a surrounding area with direct access to the adjacent Neolithic Museum of Diros, where priceless prehistoric finds of the area are exhibited.
- Access: Very easy and direct by road via the central network of Mani. The journey from Areopoli takes just 10-15 minutes by car, while from Gytheio the distance is covered in about 40 minutes via the provincial road. As the parking area is located right outside the reception center, the approach to the cave entrance is on foot through a paved pedestrian path that offers a wonderful view of the sea.
