Folklore Museum of Vytina

The Traditional Stone-Built Jewel of Mainalo with Memories of Gortynian Life The Folklore Museum of Vytina is one of the most remarkable, vibrant and timeless cultural destinations of Mountainous Arcadia. It is located in the heart of the Peloponnese, occupying an extremely privileged location at the top of the central square of Vytina, right next to the emblematic Church of Agios Tryphon (built in 1846 from the famous black marble of the region). The great advantage of the museum, which was founded in 1986 by Leonidas Anagnostopoulos and Sotiris Koukas, is that it is housed in a beautiful, newer traditional stone-built building. It operates under the care of the “Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos” Cultural Association, preserving the rich historical heritage of the place in a carefully designed space of 180 square meters.

• Exhibition type: A rich and extremely concentrated collection that develops within a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. The tour combines everyday objects, traditional costumes, carved wood furniture, textiles, as well as old agricultural and livestock tools. A special place among the exhibits is occupied by rare heirlooms, such as the will of Theodore Kolokotronis and an old manual made with gypsy nails.

The museum is traditionally renowned for its experiential and educational character, as the older remember and the younger learn about past professions such as the logger, shepherd and woodcarver that flourished in Gortynia.

The collection is maintained in an exemplary manner, while the president of the Cultural Association conducts voluntary tours that bring each object to life. Its central location gives direct access to the entire market of Vytina, to cafes, shops with local products (such as the famous fir honey) and traditional wood-fired ovens.
• Access: Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from Athens takes less than 2 hours via the Corinth - Tripoli highway, while from Tripoli the distance is covered in approximately 35-40 minutes by car. As the museum is located on the central square, the approach is on foot through the picturesque streets of the town. Ample space is available for free parking of vehicles nearby.
