Fougaro Art Center
Description
The Living Cell of Industrial Art: Where the Memory of Production Transforms into a Contemporary Cultural Hub
Fougaro Art Centre is one of the most vibrant, unexpected, and cosmopolitan cultural landmarks of modern Nafplio. Situated on the outskirts of the city along Asklipiou Avenue—the road leading to Epidaurus—it sits in direct contact with the area’s blend of urban and rural landscapes. The complex’s most striking asset is its own historical identity: rather than being a neutral, modern gallery, it is housed within the authentic facilities of the historic "Anthos" cannery (dating back to 1936). This transforms the visit into a unique experience, where the industrial past serves as the ideal setting for avant-garde art and creative expression.
- Architectural and Artistic Character: An exemplary concept for the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage. The complex, designated a listed monument in 2004, was restored with the utmost respect for its original form and opened its doors in 2012. A landmark and the site’s ultimate symbol is the imposing, towering brick chimney that rises towards the sky. The old stone and brick warehouses have been transformed into independent, high-ceilinged exhibition spaces (Fougaro Gallery, Blue2, Space 9)—flooded with light and arranged around large, serene internal courtyards and plazas.
- Suitable for: Lovers of contemporary art, design, and industrial architecture. Families, children, and students, as the space teems with creative workshops, pottery classes, and art lessons. The site preserves the memory of the early era of Greek industrial prosperity while also housing a specialized Library of Arts and Humanities, a shop featuring original art objects, and the beautiful "3 Dendra" open-air cinema. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions by acclaimed Greek and international artists, as well as live music concerts and performance art.
- Facilities: A state-of-the-art, highly functional venue meeting international standards. Fougaro Art Centre features excellent signage and comprehensive technical support, as well as the renowned all-day café-restaurant "Ernesto," which offers Mediterranean cuisine in a setting decorated with collectible vintage furniture. It offers full accessibility for people with disabilities and those with strollers, featuring specially designed level entrances to the halls, accessible pathways across the courtyards, dedicated accessible restrooms, and an electric vehicle charging station.
- Access: Very easy by car and just a short distance from the Old Town. It is located only 5 minutes (approximately 2 km) from the center of Nafplio, along 98 Asklipiou Avenue. Access is also direct for those arriving from Athens or Epidaurus, allowing them to avoid city-center traffic. A vast, spacious, and free private parking area is available right next to the complex and within its premises.
