Gialova Lagoon
Description
The Wildlife "Sanctuary" with 270 Bird Stations and Biological Intelligence
Gialova Lagoon (also known as Divari, from the Latin *vivarium*, meaning fish farm) is one of the most impressive, sensitive, and internationally recognized natural landmarks in all of Messenia. It is situated at the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, occupying a highly advantageous geographical location approximately 8 kilometers north of Pylos. A major asset of this wetland is that it constitutes the southernmost significant wetland of international importance in the Balkans, serving as an invaluable, protected Natura 2000 site for migratory birds traveling to and from Africa.
- Type of fortification: An authentic natural "fortification" of biodiversity, spanning a vast area of 6,000 stremmas. Shielded from the sea by a narrow strip of sand dunes, the wetland exhibits a rare ecological ingenuity. It features shallow, brackish waters with an average depth of no more than one meter, creating a mosaic of distinct micro-habitats—marshes, salt pans, and reed beds—that safeguard the survival of hundreds of rare species.
- Suitable for: families, students, birdwatching enthusiasts, nature lovers, and travelers wishing to witness a living natural wonder. The area is renowned for its biodiversity, providing a sanctuary for over 270 bird species (such as striking pink flamingos, herons, cormorants, and ospreys). Furthermore, it is the only place in all of Europe where the endangered African chameleon breeds.
- Infrastructure: An exemplary protected area, benefiting from the systematic contribution of environmental organizations (such as the Hellenic Ornithological Society ). Access to the site is free year-round . Specially designed wooden observation points have been set up along the wetland, allowing visitors to admire the wildlife without disturbing it, while paths and information signs highlight the area's ecological significance.
- Access: Extremely easy, quick, and direct. It takes just 5 minutes by car from the village of Gialova, while Pylos is about 15 minutes away. A paved road leads directly to Divari Beach, where free parking is available. From there, you can reach the observation points and tour the lagoon on foot or by bicycle, following flat, easily accessible paths.
