Holy Monastery of Malevi, Arcadia
Description
The Second Holy Mountain of the South: Where the Myrrh-Streaming Virgin Mary Nestles on the Fir-Clad Slopes of Mount Parnon
The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos at Malevi is one of the most renowned, historic, and spiritually radiant religious pilgrimage sites in all of Arcadia and Greece. It is situated in North Kynouria, nestled on a breathtaking, fir-clad plateau (at Xerokambi, belonging to the village of Agios Petros) at an altitude of 920 meters, on the eastern slopes of Mount Parnon. The monastery’s most striking asset is its unique natural and spiritual aura: it is surrounded by a unique, protected forest of Greek junipers (Natura 2000) and lies within an area historically dubbed the "Holy Mountain of Southern Greece" due to its vast concentration of monastic communities, making a visit an experience of profound spiritual devotion and physical rejuvenation.
- Architectural and Artistic Character: A monumental design featuring a traditional fortress-like layout. Although originally founded in the 8th century (717 AD) at a higher, secluded location, the monastery was relocated to its current site in 1616 by Abbot Iosif Karatzas. The complex is distinguished by its quadrangular arrangement. Dominating the center of the well-maintained stone enclosure is the old *Katholikon* (main church)—a small, single-aisled, barrel-vaulted structure featuring a dome and robust rubble masonry. In the eastern section, imposing steps lead up to the newer, magnificent Church of the Virgin Mary, while the complex is complemented by the picturesque chapel of Saint Neilos the Myrrh-streamer, who lived here as an ascetic in the 17th century.
- Suitable for: Pilgrims and travelers seeking major religious landmarks, as it is one of the most popular religious destinations in the country. Nature lovers, photographers, and hikers, drawn by the rare cedar forest (*Juniperus drupacea*) and the National Trail 033 that traverses Mount Parnon. The monastery preserves the memory of its contribution to the nation, having served as a hospital for the wounded troops of Theodoros Kolokotronis during the Revolution of 1821. At the heart of the faithful's devotion lies the much-tried, miraculous icon of the Dormition of the Theotokos, attributed to the Evangelist Luke and bearing a silver revetment from 1362, it is renowned worldwide for exuding Holy Myrrh since 1964.
- Facilities: A well-organized, spacious, and exceptionally welcoming site. The monastery operates as an active female monastic community (since 1949). The Monastery of Panagia Malevi features large, well-organized guest quarters for pilgrims, a spacious reception area (*archontariki*), a shop selling ecclesiastical items, and restrooms. Thanks to its large paved courtyards and the level layout of the outdoor areas, the monastery offers good accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments within its central courtyards and at the level of the old *Katholikon* (main church).
- Access: Very easy by car, via a beautiful mountain road network. It is located approximately 5 km (10 minutes) from the traditional village of Agios Petros, 20 km from the coastal town of Astros Kynourias, and about 44 km (45 minutes) from Tripoli. Access is via the Tripoli–Paralio Astros provincial road, following the clear signage to Agios Petros. A vast, spacious, and free parking area for cars and tourist buses is available right outside the monastery's monumental gate.
