Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Varsas

The Stone Ark of the Mantineian Plain: Where Byzantine Devotion Soars in the Shadow of Mytikas

The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Varses (or simply the Varses Monastery) stands as one of the most historic, imposing, and spiritually radiant religious landmarks in all of central Arcadia. Situated in the heart of the Mantineia region, it lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Ktenias (near the Mytikas peak) at an altitude of 650 meters, offering a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the Mantineian plain and the city of Tripolis. A major asset of the monastery is its authentic fortress-like architecture: rather than an open, sprawling complex, it is an impregnable stone stronghold that shelters centuries of unbroken monastic life within its walls, making a visit a unique experience of profound tranquility and Byzantine mysticism.
  • Architectural and Artistic Character: A monumental concept embodying the classic fortified monastery design. Although tradition attributes its founding to the 11th century, the monastery’s formal organization and construction date to the 14th century; its name is likely linked to the Old Slavic word *Var* (meaning fortress or castle). The complex is distinguished by its high, windowless outer walls and two-story monastic cells that form an enclosed, protected rectangular courtyard. Dominating the center is the imposing *Katholikon*—a cross-in-square church featuring an elegant octagonal dome and constructed using the refined *cloisonné* masonry technique—which retains its undiminished post-Byzantine splendor.
  • Suitable for: Pilgrims and travelers seeking historic monasteries with a deep spiritual tradition and a strict liturgical rule. Enthusiasts of Byzantine architecture and history, as well as those wishing to enjoy the serenity of the Arcadian landscape. The monastery preserves the memory of its immense contribution to the National Rebirth. Due to its strategic location overlooking Tripoli, it served as a supply hub and headquarters for Theodoros Kolokotronis during the siege of Tripolitsa. Although the monastery suffered extensive damage in 1825 and 1826 at the hands of Ibrahim Pasha’s troops, the monks managed to save its sacred relics and its significant library, which houses rare patriarchal sigillia and manuscript codices.
  • Facilities: An impeccably maintained, clean, and spiritually uplifting site. Varson Monastery is home to an active, sizable male monastic brotherhood known for its strict adherence to monastic tradition. It features a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers and trees, a well-kept reception area for welcoming visitors, and basic informational signage. Thanks to the level layout of the paved inner courtyard and easy access, the site is very easy to navigate for visitors (although there are a few small steps at the entrance to the Katholikon).
  • Access: Very easy by car, and just a stone's throw from the capital of Arcadia. It is located a mere 15 minutes (approximately 11 km) east of Tripoli. Access is via the Tripoli-Argos National Road, following clear signage that directs you to turn left towards the village of Neochori and then proceed along a gentle uphill route to the monastery. The road is fully paved and comfortable, and a large, free parking area is available right outside the monumental arched gate in the walls.
