Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross
Description
The Modern Monastic Model: Where Byzantine Spirituality Meets the Productive Work of Mapsos
The Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross in Mapsosstands as one of the most dynamic, imposing, and modern religious centers in the entire region of Corinthia. Situated in eastern Corinthia on a prime natural plateau north of the village of Mapsos, it offers an unobstructed view of the area’s rural landscape. The monastery’s most remarkable asset is its immense spiritual and social impact: it is not merely a secluded place of prayer but a vibrant hub of activity, combining strict Byzantine liturgical services with monumental productive and charitable endeavors, making a visit a unique experience that exemplifies modern monastic life.
- Architectural and Artistic Character: A monumental conception featuring a large-scale, classic monastic layout. Founded in 1989 by Hieromonk Fr. Niphon and his female monastic community, the monastery is distinguished by its imposing scale—visible from a great distance, even from the Corinth-Tripoli National Highway. The complex follows the traditional quadrilateral layout of a fortress, with high walls enclosing spacious courtyards. At its center stands the majestic *Katholikon* (main church); built according to Byzantine ecclesiastical architectural principles, it is bathed in light and impresses with the purity of its lines and its solemn, deeply reverent atmosphere.
- Suitable for: Pilgrims and travelers seeking vibrant spiritual centers with a strong commitment to social and charitable work. Families and young people, as the space serves as a meeting point and a welcoming environment. In the monastery, the memory of Christian love in action is protected. The majority of the monks have university education and expertise, supporting the monastery's structures, which include a girls' orphanage and large Christian camps that host hundreds of children each summer. At the same time, the monastery has a state-of-the-art, standard cow breeding unit and its own cheese factory, producing top quality dairy products.
- Facilities: A well-organized, spotless site that meets European standards. The monastery operates as an active female cenobitic community. It features spacious, paved inner courtyards, a comfortable reception area for welcoming visitors, restrooms, and a shop offering the nuns' renowned, authentic dairy products (graviera cheese, strained yogurt, and butter). Thanks to its modern construction and the level layout of the outdoor areas, the site offers excellent, easy accessibility.
- Access: Very easy by car, with excellent connections to the Peloponnese's main road network. It is located approximately 15–20 minutes (16 km) south of Corinth and is easily accessible from Athens (about 1 hour and 15 minutes). Access is via the Corinth-Tripoli National Road; take the exit for Chiliomodi and then follow the clear signage to the village of Mapsos. The road is wide and fully paved, allowing for easy access even for tourist buses. A large, free parking area is available right outside the monastery gate.
