The Wild Coast with the Iconic Shipwreck in Messinia
Kalamaki Beach (in Koroni) is one of the most special, "cinematic" and hidden destinations in southern Messinia. It is located on the southwestern side of the Messinian Gulf, below the picturesque village of Vasilitsi and approximately 6 kilometers south of Koroni. The absolute trademark of the beach is the rusty merchant ship that has been stranded in its shallows for decades, creating an imposing shipwreck scene that attracts attention and photographers.
- Coast type: Mixed landscape with fine pebbles, stones and sections of sand on the coast, while the seabed hides several slabs and rocks. The waters are crystal clear, deep and framed by the rusty hull of the ship, which is easily accessible even by swimming.
- Suitable for: Adventure, photography, isolation and snorkeling enthusiasts. Exploring the seabed around the wreck hides a unique marine life, making the beach a favorite spot for those wearing a mask and flippers. Due to the rocks at the entrance, beach shoes are recommended.
- Infrastructure: The beach is completely unorganized and pristine. You will not find beach bars, umbrellas, sun loungers or canteens. It is absolutely necessary to bring water, snacks and your own shade equipment with you, while hearty meals can be found in the traditional taverns in nearby Vasilitsi.
- Access: Access is a little difficult. Driving from Koroni to Vasilitsi, you will follow a passable dirt road that descends towards the coast. At the end of the road you stop the car and a short walk of a few minutes is required to get down to the secluded sandy beach.
