Description
The Historic Cradle of Freedom in Mainalo with the Stone Foundations of Kolokotronis
or Kolokotronis House (which operates as the Museum of the Greek Revolution) is one of the most historically charged, emblematic and timeless destinations in the entire Arcadias. It is located in the "heart" of Mainalos., built in a privileged and isolated mountainous location in the now uninhabited village of Libovisi, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, about 30 kilometers northwest of Tripoli. The great advantage of the area is the wild, verdant nature of dense fir forests that surrounds the historic plot, creating an ideal environment of awe and national memory, where 12 entire generations of the legendary family lived and prepared for the Struggle.
- Exhibition type: A historical space consisting of the exemplary reconstructed stone house(a faithful copy of a pre-revolutionary Arcadian residence of the 18th century), while right next to it are the authentic stone foundations of the original Kolokotrona house. The tour of the interior (which includes a ground floor room and a wooden loft) combines banners of the Struggle, traditional costumes, manuscripts, weapons and portraitsof the heroes.
- Suitable for: Families, students, nature lovers and travelers looking for a pilgrimage experience in the dens of thieves. The area is traditionally famous for its historical and moving character, as the courtyard is dominated by the imposing bust of the Old Man of Morea, while a short walk away (10 minutes) is the "Karaouli" observatory with an unobstructed view of Arkoudorema, from where the Kolokotronians watched the movements of the Turks.
- Infrastructure:Very well-maintained thanks to the complete reconstruction of 1988, which was financed by the Arcadian national benefactor Panagiotis Angelopoulos. Next to the museum is the historic church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, while a traditional municipal refreshment bar/cafe operates for visitors under the thick shade of the trees, with stone fountains and running water.
- Access:Very easy and fully paved through a magnificent forest path. The journey from Tripoli takes approximately 35-40 minutes by car, following the road to Chrysovitsi (8 km.) or Piana. On the plateau outside the historical site, there is a spacious, free parking space.
