Lake Doxa
Description
The Alpine Emerald of the Morea: Where Firs Mirror Themselves in the Waters and History Floats at the Chapel of Faneromeni
Lake Doxa is one of the most fairytale-like, idyllic, and popular natural landscapes in the entire mountainous Peloponnese. It is located in Western Corinthia, in the area of Ancient Feneos, nestled at an altitude of 900 meters between the imposing peaks of Ziria and Helmos. The remarkable feature of this destination is that, despite being an artificial lake (created in the late 1990s through the construction of a dam), its beauty is so captivating that it evokes an authentic Swiss Alpine landscape, having blended seamlessly into the natural environment.
- Its Natural & Romantic Character: A watery oasis surrounded by a dense, pristine forest of black pine, fir, oak, and chestnut trees. The lake’s defining feature is a narrow, picturesque strip of land that extends into the heart of the water. At the tip of this peninsula stands the beautiful white chapel of Agios Fanourios (or Palaiomonastiro), which appears to float magically upon the lake's mirror-like surface.
- Suitable for: Families, couples, and enthusiasts of hiking, photography, and mountain biking, as well as travelers seeking ultimate relaxation amidst nature. The flat perimeter road (approximately 4 kilometers long) is ideal for a leisurely walk or bike ride. During the summer months, the lake comes alive with activities such as pedal boating, kayaking, and horseback riding along the banks or even refreshing dips in its crystal-clear waters.
- Facilities: Access to the lake and the area around it is free around the clock, with no admission fee. Along the shores, you will find wooden picnic benches, while local producers often set up small stalls selling fine local products, such as the famous Feneos *tsakisto* bean (PDO), honey, and traditional pasta. For dining and accommodation, the surrounding villages of Feneos (such as Goura and Mosia) offer excellent traditional guesthouses and stone-built tavernas.
- Access: Very easy by car via the mountain road network. The lake is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes from Athens (via Kiato and Stymfalia) and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Tripoli. The road is fully paved and circles the lake, offering convenient spots to park your car anywhere and continue on foot along the water's edge.
