Lake Taka
Description
The Seasonal Mysterious Wetland of Tegea with the Hidden Sinkholes
The Lima Taka is one of the most unique, changing and important wetlands of Arcadia and the entire Peloponnese. It is located on the historical plateau of Tegea, in a privileged location south of the Mantinean plateau, approximately 10 kilometers from Tripoli. The great advantage of the area is its protected and pristine nature, which is included in the European Natura 2000 network, creating a unique refuge for wildlife that extends over a watershed with a reservoir perimeter of up to 4.4 kilometers.
- Route type: An impressive natural phenomenon that changes form depending on the season. The lake is fed in autumn and winter with fresh water from rain and streams (the largest being Valtetsorema), while in summer it is completely drained through a system of 7 natural sinkholesthat lead the waters to underground rivers. This results in the neighboring village of Vouno being riverside in winter and inland in summer!
- Suitable for:Nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, cyclists and travelers looking for a peaceful getaway. The area is traditionally renowned for its ecological character, as during the spring it turns into a vibrant transit station for rare migratory birds, such as egrets, copperheads, short-tailed eagles, kingfishers and cormorants.
- Infrastructure: Lightly developed with an emphasis on environmental protection and the agricultural economy. A large, geometric artificial reservoir has been constructed on the lake that holds water for the irrigation of the crops of the Tegea plain. The surrounding area is ideal for walking and cycling, while in the nearby villages (such as Kerasitsa and Vouno) there are traditional cafes and taverns.
- Access: Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from the center of Tripoli takes just 10-15 minutes by car via the provincial network of Tripoli - Astros or via Kerasitsa. The road approach to the shores of the lake is smooth, while the surrounding rural roads provide ample free space for parking vehicles.
