Monastery of the Holy Cross
Description
The Sanctuary of Love and Creativity: Where Monasticism Becomes a Shield for Social Contribution
The Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross in Mapsos, Corinthia, stands as one of the most dynamic, imposing, and modern religious centers in the entire Peloponnese, even though other historic *metochia* (monastic dependencies) bearing the same name also dominate the wider region. The monastery’s most remarkable asset—centered on its well-known production hub in Mapsos—is its immense spiritual and social impact: it is not merely an isolated place of prayer but a vibrant hive of creative activity, combining strict Byzantine liturgical services with monumental productive work, making a visit a unique experience that exemplifies modern monasticism.
- Architectural and Artistic Character: A monumental conception featuring a large-scale, classic monastic layout. Established in 1989 in the area of Mapsos, the monastery is distinguished by its imposing mass, visible from a great distance. The complex follows the traditional quadrilateral arrangement of a fortress, with high walls enclosing spacious courtyards. At its center stands the majestic *Katholikon* (main church)—built according to Byzantine ecclesiastical architectural principles—which is bathed in light and impresses with the purity of its lines, its marble iconostasis, and an atmosphere of profound solemnity and reverence.
- Suitable for: Pilgrims and travelers seeking vibrant spiritual centers with a strong commitment to social, missionary, and charitable work. Families and young people, as the space has traditionally been a place of meeting, hospitality, and spiritual guidance. The monastery preserves the spirit of Christian love in action. The nuns support the convent’s facilities, which include an orphanage for girls and large Christian camps that host hundreds of children every summer. At the same time, the monastery operates a model dairy farm and its own cheese-making facility, producing top-quality dairy products.
- Facilities: A well-organized, spotless facility built to modern standards. The monastery operates as an active female cenobitic community. It features spacious, stone-paved inner courtyards, a comfortable reception area for welcoming visitors, restrooms, and a shop offering the nuns' renowned, authentic dairy products (graviera cheese, yogurt, and butter). Thanks to its modern construction and the level layout of the outdoor areas, the site offers excellent, smooth accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments.
- Access: Very easy by road, with an excellent connection to the main network of the Peloponnese. It is about 15-20 minutes (16 km) south of the city of Corinth. Access is via the Corinth-Tripoli National Road, following the exit to Chiliomodi and then the clear signs to the village of Mapsos. The road is comfortable and fully asphalted, allowing easy access. A large, free parking lot is available right outside the monastery gate.
