Kalavryta

Kalavryta—one of the most imposing and historic traditional settlements in mountainous Achaea—is a stately town and the seat of the Municipality of Kalavryta. Nestled at the foot of the Aroania Mountains (Helmos) at an altitude of 735 meters, it rightly attracts global interest thanks to its priceless national heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. A key landmark of the area is its pivotal role in the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821—initiated at the nearby Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra—as well as the tragic sacrifice of its inhabitants during the Kalavryta Holocaust in December 1943 at the hands of German occupation forces; an event that has defined the town as a symbol of peace and martyrdom.
