Lagkadia

Lagadia, one of the most imposing and aristocratic traditional settlements of mountainous Arcadia, is a historic manor house in the Municipality of Gortynia built on a steep slope of Mainalo at an altitude of 900 meters, which has rightly been described as the "hanging village of the Peloponnese" due to its impressive amphitheatrical structure. A point of reference for the area is the long tradition of its residents as the leading "builders and pelicans of stone" (Lagadia Masons), who rebuilt with their famous art most of the stone bridges, mansions and churches of the Peloponnese, while the village was the homeland of the historic Deligiannai family and an important stronghold during the Revolution of 1821. Today, Lagadia enchants the visitor with its multi-storey stone mansions, serpentine cobblestone streets, carved stone fountains and historic churches, such as the Church of the Archangels with the famous stone bell tower of 1811, while offering a breathtaking view of the deep gorge of the Touthoa River. With its iconic 1868 High School building as its trademark and being an ideal starting point for excursions to western Mainalos, it is a top destination for lovers of architecture, history and alternative activities, such as trekking on the trails of the area.
