Agios Petros

Agios Petros, one of the most imposing and stately traditional settlements in mountainous Arcadia, is a historic large village within the Municipality of North Kynouria. Built amphitheatrically on the lush green slopes of Mount Parnon at an altitude of 950 meters, it is rightly hailed as the "jewel of Parnon" thanks to its unparalleled natural beauty and the preservation of its authentic Tsakonian and Arcadian identity. Key features of the area include its close proximity to the historic and renowned Holy Monastery of Panagia Malevi—one of the Peloponnese's most significant pilgrimage sites—as well as the village's active role in the 1821 Revolution, serving as a major hub for supplying and recruiting fighters from Kynouria. Today, Agios Petros captivates visitors with its imposing stone mansions—such as the famous Trikalitis Tower—picturesque cobblestone alleys, traditional fountains, and a beautiful central square featuring the majestic 19th-century Church of Agios Petros, where small shops overflow with fine local products like chestnuts, walnuts, and local cheeses. Characterized by the dense forest of fir and chestnut trees that surrounds it, and serving as a prime base for hiking trails leading to the summit of Mount Parnon, it is a top destination for enthusiasts of history, religious tourism, and alternative activities such as trekking and mountain recreation.
