Falaisia

Falaisia, one of the most authentic and historic traditional settlements in southern Arcadia, is a beautiful village within the Municipality of Megalopolis. Built on a lush, tree-covered hill at the foothills of the northern Taygetos range at an altitude of 760 meters, it rightfully lent its name to the entire historic region, owing to the ancient and medieval settlement of "Falaisia" mentioned in the writings of Pausanias. A key landmark of the area is the nearby, historic 11th-century Byzantine Monastery of Boura (dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos), nestled amidst the rich Arcadian landscape. The village—formerly known as Boura—also boasts a long history; destroyed during the Ottoman occupation and later reborn, it served as a significant stronghold for the wider province of Leontari. Today, Falaisia captivates visitors with its stone houses, quiet lanes, the renovated Church of Agia Triada (which once formed the heart of the medieval settlement), and a rich folklore collection that preserves local traditions, all while offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Megalopolis basin. With its signature event—the renowned traditional "Boureiko" festival of the Virgin Mary in August—and its strategic location near historical landmarks such as medieval Leontari and the Rekitsa Monastery, it stands as a premier destination for enthusiasts of authentic history, tranquility, and alternative activities, including nature hiking along the pristine trails of Mount Taygetos.
