Valtesiniko

Valtesiniko, one of the most imposing and authentic traditional settlements of mountainous Arcadia, is a historic village of the Municipality of Gortynia, built amphitheatrically on the northern slopes of Mainalo at an altitude of 1,150 meters, which rightly attracts travelers due to its wild natural beauty and its rich folk tradition in woodcarving. A reference point of the area is the ruins of the medieval fortress at the "Castle" location that dominates the village, as well as its historical contribution to the Revolution of 1821, as it was the base of Theodore Kolokotronis and a hideout for the fighters, culminating in the battle at the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos (Kalogera) where the locals strongly resisted the troops of Ibrahim. Today, Valtesiniko enchants the visitor with its imposing stone mansions, stone fountains, picturesque cobblestone streets and impressive churches —such as the magnificent Church of Agios Georgios with its octagonal dome and the Church of Agios Theodoros— while offering a breathtaking, panoramic view of the fir-covered peaks of Menalon. With the old Sanatorium of Mana on the borders of the municipality as its trademark and constituting the terminal station of the 7th section of the Menalon Trail (Nymfasia - Valtesiniko) and the starting point of the 8th section to Lagadia, it is a top destination for lovers of history and alternative activities, such as Trekking, mountain biking and hiking.
