Zygovisti

Zygovisti, one of the most imposing and historic traditional settlements of mountainous Arcadia, is a castle village in the Municipality of Gortynia built on the slopes of Mainalo at an altitude of 1,160 meters, which has rightly been characterized as the homeland of the "Immortals" due to its unique medieval and revolutionary atmosphere. A landmark of the area is the famous Immortals Square with the hero-monument, an impressive marble open book of large dimensions, built in honor of the Zygovisti fighters who formed the select personal guard of Theodoros Kolokotronis during the Revolution of 1821. Today, Zygovisti enchants the visitor with its stone mansions, cobblestone streets and old churches — such as the magnificent church of the Transfiguration of the Savior and the historic churches of Agios Nikolaos and Agios Ioannis — while offering a breathtaking view of the fir forest of Mainalo. With its trademark, the preserved Kapodistrian Didakterion of 1830, it is becoming a top destination for lovers of history and alternative activities, as it is a key station and refueling point on the Menalon Trail (specifically the Dimitsana - Zygovisti - Elati route), ideal for Trekking.
