Galatas

Galatas, one of the most imposing and historic coastal settlements in the Troizinia region, is a beautiful small town and the seat of the Municipality of Troizinia-Methana; built on the northeastern coast of the Peloponnese at an altitude of 23 meters, it rightly attracts visitors thanks to its island-like atmosphere and strategic location directly opposite cosmopolitan Poros. Key landmarks of the area include Ancient Troizina—the mythical birthplace of Theseus, with its archaeological site located just a short distance away—and the site of the historic Third National Assembly of 1827; the town itself developed gradually after 1920, primarily through the settlement of livestock farmers from Arcadia, deriving its name from the local dairies and milkmen (*galatades*). Today, Galatas captivates visitors with its seaside promenade—offering stunning panoramic views of the narrow strait and the historic clock tower of Poros—as well as its picturesque fish taverns and traditional coffee houses. With its signature landmark—the famous Lemon Forest (Lemonodasos), a lush green expanse featuring over 30,000 lemon trees and running water, celebrated in the eponymous work by Kosmas Politis—alongside stunning nearby beaches like Alyki and Plaka and the mysterious vaulted tombs of Magoula, it stands as a premier destination for enthusiasts of history, relaxation, and alternative activities such as hiking, cycling, and sea excursions.
