Ano Trikala

Ano Trikala, one of the most imposing and aristocratic traditional settlements in mountainous Corinthia, is the highest-altitude village in the Municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostini. Built on the fir-clad slopes of Mount Ziria (Kyllini) at an elevation of 1,100 meters, it has rightfully earned the title of the area’s "aristocratic quarter" thanks to its rich historical heritage and stately architecture. A key landmark is the iconic, heritage-listed Notaras Mansion—dating back to the 16th century—as the village was the historic seat of the powerful Notaras aristocratic family, who played a leading role in the Greek War of Independence of 1821. It is also the birthplace of Saint Gerasimos Notaras (1509), the patron saint of Kefalonia; his ancestral home still stands today and serves as a church and place of pilgrimage. Today, Ano Trikala captivates visitors with its well-preserved stone mansions featuring wooden roofs, narrow cobblestone alleys, centuries-old plane trees, and historic churches—such as the impressive Church of Agios Nikolaos with its remarkable post-Byzantine frescoes—while offering breathtaking panoramic views of the mountain peaks. ...of the mountain and the Corinthian Gulf. With its signature landmark—the historic 15th-century Monastery of Agios Vlasios, nestled among the fir trees just outside the settlement—as well as direct access to the alpine Lake Dasiou and the slopes of the Ziria Ski Center, the village is a premier year-round destination. It is ideal for enthusiasts of history, mountain recreation, and alternative activities, such as trekking in the protected Flambouritsa Valley.
