Andravida

Andravida, one of the most imposing and historic settlements in the plains of Elis, is a stately town and the seat of the municipal unit of the same name within the Municipality of Andravida-Kyllini. Situated at an altitude of 14 meters in the heart of the fertile Elian plain, it rightfully holds a prominent place in European medieval history, having served as the magnificent capital of the Frankish Principality of Achaea. A key landmark of the area is the iconic 13th-century Gothic Church of Agia Sophia, built by Dominican monks during the reign of Geoffrey II Villehardouin. This church served as the gathering place for Frankish nobles—hosting the famous Councils of Andravida—and as the religious center of the principality; today, it stands as the only visible and imposing remnant of that glorious era within the town center. Modern-day Andravida captivates visitors with its rich cultural heritage, vibrant market, and international renown in the field of horse breeding. With its signature landmarks—the state-of-the-art Andravida Equestrian Center (hosting the historic and renowned Andravida Horse Fair every September, an event held continuously since 1928) and the 117th Combat Wing airbase—alongside its close proximity to the imposing Chlemoutsi Castle and the protected Kotychi-Strofylia wetland, the area stands as a premier destination for enthusiasts of medieval history, equestrian tourism, and alternative forms of travel.
