Andritsaina
Andritsaina—one of the most imposing and aristocratic traditional settlements in the mountainous Peloponnese—is a historic town of distinction within the Municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena in Ilia. Built amphitheatrically on the wooded slopes of Mount Lykaion at an altitude of 760 meters, it has rightfully earned the title of the region’s "stone noblewoman" thanks to its unique architecture and profound intellectual heritage. Key landmarks include the historic Nikolopouleios Library—one of Greece’s oldest and most significant, housing rare manuscripts and over 40,000 volumes—as well as the town's immense contribution to the Revolution of 1821; as the birthplace of Panagiotis Anagnostopoulos (a member of the *Filiki Etaireia*) and a staging ground for freedom fighters, it suffered total destruction at the hands of Ibrahim Pasha’s troops in 1826. Today, Andritsaina captivates visitors with its imposing multi-story mansions, winding cobblestone alleys, and renowned fountains—foremost among them the world-famous "Trani Vrysi" (Great Fountain) of 1724, which stands as the oldest dated fountain in the entire Peloponnese. With its standout landmark—the exceptional Folklore Museum (Kanellopoulos Mansion)—and its close proximity to the world-renowned Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae (the "Parthenon of the Peloponnese") and the impressive Neda Gorge, it is a premier destination for enthusiasts of history, archaeology, and alternative activities, such as trekking along the ancient trails of Mount Lykaion.
