Ancient Ilida, one of the most imposing and historically charged archaeological destinations of the western Peloponnese, is a major archaeological site of the Municipality of Ilida in Ilia, built on the banks of the Piniakos Ladon at an altitude of 90 meters, which rightfully holds a prominent place in the world heritage as the organizer and protector city-state of the Ancient Olympic Games. A point of reference of the region is its leading role in antiquity, as athletes from every corner of the Greek world gathered in Ilida a month before the start of the games, in order to carry out their final preparation under the strict supervision of the Hellanodika, before starting the official sacred procession to Olympia. Today, Ancient Ilida enchants the visitor with its impressive remains, among which the Ancient Theater of Ilida with its characteristic earthen cave dominates, the Ancient Agora, the arcades, the Gymnasium and the modern Archaeological Museum that hosts priceless finds from the excavations of the area. With its trademark the serene beauty of the plain that surrounds it and its immediate proximity to the artificial Lake of Pinios, it is a top destination for lovers of archaeology, cultural tourism and alternative tours in the Ionian nature.
