Karytaina

Karytaina, one of the most imposing and historic traditional settlements of mountainous Arcadia, is a castle village of the Municipality of Megalopolis built on a steep hill at an altitude of 580 meters, which has rightly been described as the "Toledo of Greece" due to its unique medieval atmosphere. The area's landmark is the famous Frankish Castle of Karytaina, which crowns the settlement, built in the 13th century by Godfrey de Bruyères, which was one of the strongest fortresses of the Frankish period and later became the strategic base of Theodore Kolokotronis during the Revolution of 1821. Today, Karytaina enchants the visitor with its stone mansions, cobblestone streets and Byzantine churches, while offering a breathtaking view of the Megalopolis plain and the Lousios River Gorge, with the emblematic five-arched bridge of Karytaina with the integrated Byzantine chapel as its trademark, making it a top destination for lovers of history and alternative activities, such as Rafting and Trekking.
