Laconia

Ierakas

Ierakas (or Gerakas)—one of the most imposing and distinctive traditional settlements in coastal Laconia—is a beautiful fishing village within the Municipality of Monemvasia. It is built on the prefecture's eastern coast, with its seaport (Gerakas Port) situated at sea level; this port has rightly been dubbed the "Greek fjord" due to the unique, narrow strip of sea that cuts deep into the land, creating a sheltered, azure lagoon. A key landmark of the area is the significant archaeological site of the ancient city of Zaraka, which crowns the mouth of the bay, was founded—according to mythology—by the hero Zarikas and is described by the traveler Pausanias as a "place with a good harbor"; indeed, this sheltered port served over the centuries as a pirate stronghold, a strategic Byzantine naval base against the Saracens, and a safe anchorage for the merchant ships of Hydra and Spetses. Today, Ierakas captivates visitors with its traditional white houses and red-tiled roofs—strongly reminiscent of an Aegean island—its quiet seaside lanes, and excellent waterfront fish tavernas serving the freshest seafood, all while offering breathtaking views of the fjord’s calm, still waters. Defined by its unique lagoon—a protected wetland within the Natura 2000 network—it is a premier destination for enthusiasts of history, tranquility, and alternative activities such as sailing, kayaking, and hiking to the ruins of the Hellenistic acropolis.
