Kastania

Kastania, one of Laconia’s most imposing and historic traditional settlements, is a fortified village within the Municipality of East Mani. Built on a lush, wooded slope on the southeastern side of Mount Taygetos at an altitude of 780 meters, it rightly attracts visitors thanks to its authentic Mani architecture and its long history associated with the *Klephts*—the rebel fighters of the renowned Bardounochoria region. A key historical landmark for the area is the epic and dramatic Siege of Kastania in July 1780, when 14,000 Ottoman troops surrounded the fortified towers of the legendary *Klepht* and *Armatolos* captain, Panagiotaros Venetsanakis. Theodoros Kolokotronis (along with his pregnant wife) also actively participated in that heroic battle—where Panagiotaros and his comrades fought to the last man—managing to break through the besiegers' lines and escape, thereby inextricably linking his name to the village. Today, Kastania (known to locals as Kastanitsa) captivates visitors with its imposing fortified stone houses, narrow cobblestone alleys, and magnificent Byzantine churches, such as the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior and the historic 13th-century Church of Saint John. Distinguished by its breathtaking view of Bardounia Castle and its immediate proximity to the renowned, majestic Holy Monastery of Panagia Giatrissa, the settlement is a premier destination for enthusiasts of history, religious tourism, and alternative activities—such as nature hiking along the trails of Mount Taygetos.
