Laconia

Kastoreio

Kastoreio, one of Laconia’s most impressive and richly endowed traditional settlements, is a lush green village in the Municipality of Sparta. Built amphitheatrically on the northeastern slopes of the northern Taygetos range at an altitude of 500 meters, it rightly attracts visitors thanks to its abundant natural beauty—featuring plentiful running water—and its direct links to mythology. Key features of the area include its name, which is associated with the mythical hero Castor (one of the Dioscuri and brother of Helen of Troy), as well as its glorious history —when it was known as Kastania—having played an active role in the Orlov Revolt of 1770 and the Revolution of 1821. Today, Kastori captivates visitors with its remarkably well-preserved architecture, imposing 19th-century stone mansions, picturesque cobblestone alleys, cool squares, and the springs of Agios Mamas and Agios Ioannis. Its signature landmark is the impressive Kastoras River Gorge, featuring the historic Marmarogefyro (Marble Bridge), The Mills Gorge and the rock-hewn chapel of Panagia Misosporitissa constitute a premier destination for alternative tourism, ideal for nature lovers and enthusiasts of activities such as trekking, mountaineering, and canyoning.
