Plytra
Plytra, one of the most impressive and charming seaside settlements in Laconia, is a beautiful holiday village within the Municipality of Monemvasia. Situated at sea level on the eastern shores of the Laconian Gulf (in the Municipal Unit of Asopos), it rightly attracts global interest thanks to its exotic blue-and-yellow shores and the mysterious ancient monuments concealed beneath its waters. A key landmark of the area is the submerged city of Ancient Asopos at the "Kokkinies" site, whose crimson-hued ruins —such as walls, the foundations of Roman structures, and harbor installations—are visible to the naked eye both along the coast and within the sea. This thriving ancient city, which was a member of the League of Free Laconians and issued its own strong currency, was submerged in 365 AD following a massive, devastating earthquake—the same event historically responsible for the separation of the iconic Rock of Monemvasia. Today, Plytra captivates visitors with its atmosphere, which is at once cosmopolitan and serene, the picturesque small harbor hosting pleasure boats, the excellent seaside fish tavernas, and the stunning, Blue Flag-awarded Pacheia Ammos beach—renowned for its vast stretch of golden sand and shallow, crystal-clear turquoise waters; featuring the landmark semi-ruined stone house of the Venetsanakis family at Artanis beach (the settlement’s oldest, dating back to before 1870)—where, according to oral tradition, Theodoros Kolokotronis once stayed—as well as the annual Equestrian Gathering held in July, The settlement is a premier destination for enthusiasts of archaeology, relaxation, and alternative water activities, offering an ideal snorkeling experience over history submerged in the water.
