Sellasia
Sellasia, one of Laconia’s most imposing and historic settlements, is a traditional village within the Municipality of Sparta. Situated at an altitude of 600 meters at the foot of Mount Parnon, it rightly attracts visitor interest thanks to its strategic location—serving as the northern gateway to the Laconian plain—and its long tradition of high-quality olive cultivation. A key landmark of the area is the famous and pivotal Battle of Sellasia (222 BC), which took place on the adjacent plain traversed by the Oinous River. There, the combined forces of the Macedonians under Antigonus Doson and the Achaean League crushed the army of the reformist Spartan king Cleomenes III, definitively closing the chapter on ancient Sparta as an autonomous hegemonic power and sealing the end of the era of classical city-states. Today, Sellasia (formerly known as Vroulia) captivates visitors with its authentic rural tranquility, beautiful houses, and well-kept central square, as well as the traces of the ancient settlement and Hellenistic fortress found on the surrounding hills of Palaiogoulas and Agios Konstantinos. With the mysterious Late Byzantine Castle of Palaiopanagitsa—which dominates the area west of the village, overlooking the gorge leading to the Eurotas Valley—serving as its signature landmark, and hosting the renowned annual Olive and Oil Festival every August, the settlement is a premier destination for enthusiasts of archaeology, agritourism, and alternative excursions across the lush green slopes of Mount Parnon.
