Archaia Messini

Ancient Messene—one of the Peloponnese's most imposing, magnificent, and well-preserved historical destinations—is a major archaeological site within the Municipality of Messene. Situated at an altitude of 330 meters on the western slopes of the historic, fortified Mount Ithome (adjacent to the picturesque village of Mavrommati), it has rightfully been dubbed the "Pompeii of Greece" due to its vast scale and the remarkable condition in which its structures have been revealed. A key historical milestone for the area is the city's founding in 369 BC by the renowned Theban general...It was Epaminondas who, following his victory over the Spartans at the Battle of Leuctra, liberated the Messenians from long-standing Spartan rule and designed a new, free, and powerful capital based on the innovative Hippodamian urban planning system. Today, Ancient Messene captivates visitors with its vast archaeological park, dominated by the monumental Ancient Theatre, the monumental Fountain of Arsinoe, the enclosed Asclepieion—which served as the city's religious and political hub—and the breathtaking, restored Stadium and Gymnasium with their impressive Doric stoas. Distinguished by its colossal Cyclopean fortification walls—stretching 9.5 kilometers and featuring the iconic Arcadian Gate with its twin towers—as well as its local Archaeological Museum and the life's work of the late archaeologist Petros Themelis who brought it to light, the site stands as a world-class destination for enthusiasts of archaeology, cultural tourism, and alternative excursions into the Messenian landscape.
