Pyrgos

Pyrgos, the vibrant and historic capital of the Regional Unit of Ilia, is a dynamic city in the western Peloponnese that took its name from the impressive tower that its founder, Georgios Tsernotas, had built in the area in the 16th century. The city carries a great intellectual, cultural and commercial heritage, which is ideally reflected in its emblematic neoclassical buildings, with top architectural jewels the Latsi Municipal Hall, the historic Apollon Theater and the Municipal Market designed by the famous architect Ernesto Ziller. Today, Pyrgos is the administrative and economic center of the wider region, offering large pedestrian squares with cafes and restaurants, a rich market and intense daily life, while its strategic location makes it the ultimate gateway to the world-famous Archaeological Site of Ancient Olympia, its picturesque harbor, Katakolo, and the endless, golden beaches of the Ionian Sea.
