The Castle of Karytaina It is one of the most emblematic, historical and impregnable fortresses in the entire Arcadias. It is located in western Gortynia, built on top of a steep, vertical rock above the traditional settlement of Karytaina, at an altitude of 600 meters., near the point where the Lousios River meets the Alpheios. The great advantage of the castle is its strategic, geographical location, which offers a breathtaking, unobstructed 360-degree view of the plain of Megalopolis, a fact that made it known in world history as the "Toledo of Greece".
- Fortification type:An authentic medieval fort with a triangular shape, whose walls follow the natural line of the cliff, making it inaccessible from three sides. Its ruins include the outer ramparts, the gates, water tanks, as well as the remains of the large, two-story Frankish palace (administration)of the barons on the top of the rock.

The ascent to the castle begins through the narrow alleys of Karytaina and is done exclusively on foot, through a passable, uphill stone path (duration approximately 15-20 minutes). Free parking is available at the entrance to the village.
