The historic bridge of Karytaina
Description
The Monumental “Bridge of Five Thousand” at Alfeios with the Hidden Byzantine ChapelThe Historic Bridge of Karytaina is one of the most emblematic, impressive and recognizable architectural destinations in all of Arcadia. It is located in western Gortynia, built in a strategic location above the rushing Alfeios River, approximately 17 kilometers from Megalopolis and 54 kilometers from Tripoli. The great advantage of the area is the wild natural beauty of the Alfeios Gorge that surrounds the monument, creating an imposing backdrop under the rock of Karytaina, which for centuries was the only passage connecting the castle of Gortynia with Messinia and Ilia.
- Type of route: A historic stone bridge with a total length of over 50 meters and a height of 12 meters, which in its original form had 5 or 6 unequal arches (with the longest span reaching 9 meters). Today, crossing the old bridge is not possible as only 3 of the original arches remain standing (the central one was blown up during the Civil War), while modern road traffic is carried by the new, large concrete bridge that stands directly above it.
- Suitable for: Nature lovers, architecture enthusiasts, historical researchers and travelers looking for unique photographic landscapes. The bridge is traditionally famous for its legendary and cosmopolitan character, as it became world-famous when it was depicted on the back of the famous 5,000 drachma banknote (along with the figure of Theodoros Kolokotronis).
- Infrastructure: A gently sloping area that is under protection and restoration. The most impressive infrastructure feature of the monument is the small Byzantine chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which is built into the base of one of the bridge pillars. In the wider area of the river, organized alternative tourism bases for rafting, kayaking and hiking operate.
- Access: Very easy, fast and direct. The journey from Karytaina takes just 3-5 minutes by car, descending the main road to Megalopolis. The old bridge is "hidden" just under the modern highway bridge. At the edge of the road, near the ruins of the old watermills, there is free space for safe parking and a pedestrian approach for photos.
