Chiliomodi
Chiliomodi—one of the most vibrant and historically rich settlements in the semi-mountainous region of Corinthia—is a large, stately village within the Municipality of Corinth. Situated at an altitude of 340 meters on the route from Corinth to Argos and serving as the seat of the Tenea Municipal Unit, it rightly attracts global interest thanks to its priceless archaeological heritage and long-standing tradition as a hub of trade and culture. A key landmark of the area is Ancient Tenea, a significant ancient city-state that, according to legend, was founded by Trojan prisoners whom Agamemnon allowed to settle there following the Trojan War. Recent, impressive archaeological excavations (the Tenea Project) have brought to light monumental Hellenistic funerary structures, Roman baths, rare coin hoards, and the remains of an Asclepieion, confirming the power and wealth of the ancient city—which was also the birthplace of the famous "Kouros of Tenea" that graces the Glyptothek in Munich. Furthermore, the village is linked to the Greek War of Independence of 1821 through the nearby Battle of Dervenakia—with the "Nikitaras" hill featuring a statue of the hero—and is the birthplace of the world-renowned actress Irene Papas. Today, Chiliomodi captivates visitors with its vibrancy, lovely market, and proximity to significant religious monuments, such as the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni (featuring an old *katholikon* dating back to the 16th century). Defined by the lush pine forest that surrounds it, its historic railway station, and traditional tavernas serving fine local meats, the settlement is a prime destination for enthusiasts of archaeology, cultural tourism, and alternative travel, offering an ideal base for exploring the Corinthian countryside.
