Aegio

Aegio (historically also known as Vostitsa), the stately and lively second largest city of Achaia and seat of the Municipality of Aegialia, is a beautiful destination built amphitheatrically on three levels (the Beach, the Galaxidiotiko neighborhood and the Upper Town) that offers a breathtaking view of the Corinthian Gulf. The city carries a heavy historical heritage, as it is mentioned by Homer as one of the most important cities of the Achaian League, while in more recent times it has been the global epicenter of trade and export of the black Corinthian currant (“the black gold of Greece”), the wealth of which is reflected to this day in the well-preserved neoclassical mansions and the old raisin warehouses of the port that have been converted into elegant cafes. The city's landmarks include the imposing, Renaissance-style Church of Panagia Trypitis (Zoodochou Pigi), built into a steep rock next to the waves, the centuries-old Plane Tree of Pausanias on the beach and the architectural jewels of Ernest Ziller, such as the Municipal Market and the Metropolitan Church of Faneromeni. Today, Aigio ideally combines the cosmopolitan life of a modern city with the sea breeze, offering easy access to enchanting neighboring coasts (such as Selianitika, Longos and Akoli), while also being the perfect starting point for exploring the mountainous villages of Aegialia and the Vouraikos Gorge with the legendary Cogwheel Railway.
